Recognized Medical Counselor - Island of Tonga

Lydell “Tupu” Lawrence was born in Orem, Utah, and raised in Laie, Hawaii, from the age of 10. With German, Irish, Samoan, and Tongan heritage, Lydell grew up surrounded by diverse cultures and communities that continue to shape his approach to counseling today.

Lydell earned his Bachelor of Arts in International Cultural Studies, with an emphasis in Communications and Peacebuilding, from Brigham Young University–Hawaii in 2016. He later earned his Master of Arts in Counseling from Wayland Baptist University in 2021. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the State of Hawaii and a Recognized Mental Health Counselor in Tonga, with five years of experience in the mental health field.

Why Counseling Is Personal to Me

Before becoming a counselor, Lydell served 12 years in the U.S. Army, including three tours of duty. Following his military service, he faced his own challenges with PTSD and the transition to civilian life. Counseling became an important part of his healing journey and gave him a deeper understanding of what it feels like to sit on the other side of the counseling room.

That experience helped shape his desire to support others as they navigate their own challenges, healing, and personal growth.
